Ignore the naysayers, they are ignorant of the facts. Yes, vegetarianism has a great big bunch to do with global warming, and I totally commend you for your choices.
Will vegetarianism help you lose weight? That all depends. If you're lacto ovo, know that dairy and eggs are very fattening. One egg has more cholesterol than a serving of butter, or a serving of the drippiest, fattiest pork sausage. Really! And if you think about it, cow milk is designed to make a small calf into a big animal that weighs thousands of pounds, in just one year. It's pretty fattening, dairy is.
Also, if you eat fried veggies, like tempura or French fries, these foods may be vegan, but are they low in calories?
What matters at the end of the day is whether or not you've burned more than what you've ingested throughout the day. To lose weight, we must create a calorie defecit (sp?). That is, eat less than you burn. As long as you do that, you will lose weight.
A note about carbs... it matters NOT where your calories come from, it's all a numbers game by the end of the day. There is nothing wrong with carbs, really. The media can mold our minds, and that it's done with the low-carb phenomenon. Low carb is unhealthy, balance it out.
Again, ignore the naysayers, it ain't worth sweatin' over. Especially ignore the advice on making sure to get enough protein from animal sources. Protein isn't a problem, even for veg heads. Animal souces are a big problem though, so keep up the veggies!

That is really funny since-- I am a vegetarian because of "Global Ice Age coming". I started in 1965 and we were told by the scientists that the globe was cooling and a lot of bad things were going to happen.(had been cooling for several decades. But ,then in the late 1970's we were being told the temperature was now at a standstill and could even warm!!!
PS I did lose weight early into this life style but when I learned about the globe being OK I went off the wagon and gained back weight pretty quickly.
No, I am not going back to that life style unless they can prove "MAN is really causing this. I believe now that this is the ebb and tide of the giant universe not those little ants called humans.

I see that most of the people that answered haven't bothered themselves to read the U.N. report on climate change!
As Dolores said the only thing that will make you lose weight is burning more calories than you take in! Eat massive amount of veggie food and stay idle and you will gain weight. Eat a reasonable amount of calories and be active and you will lose weight.
As to climate change... It doesn't matter whether it's because our entire solar system is inside a planetary nebula and moving into a denser zone or whether we've mis-calculated the solar constant or whether man really is skewing the energy balance! The simple FACT is that the energy balance of our planets ecology is on an upswing! We are not as a species equipped to handle this change and we need to be pro-active to reduce and/or reverse this increase. One method is to reduce the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere. Another method (which would also have faster results) would be to reduce the amount of methane and Nox in the atmosphere. The major source of these gasses is animal husbandry. Period!
Also try to cope with the reality that some power brokers like to speak of "useless eaters" and advocate unleashing nuclear weapons as a method to drastically and quickly reduce population and reverse the energy balance through nuclear winter. It sounds insane (actually it IS insane) but run a few searches on the topic and you'll be horrified to learn that quite a few 'conservative' think-tanks approve of the idea.

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.
The plan was so refreshing and so simple to follow. I did everything plan said and lost 23 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm now starting the diet again to lose 7 more pounds. This plan has changed my life.
Get started today!

well I find dairy fat is a killer for putting on weight so if you're still eating dairy I doubt that you'll lose weight. Cutting out dairy would most likely result in a weight loss though, and the dairy cows don't get that much of a better deal then meat ones. The calfs are weaned at just a few days and the boys sent off to become veal or killed.

Maybe. Maybe not. How much sugar do you eat? I had a roommate who was vegetarian and struggled with her weight while I ate steaks and chicken. She ate some sweets, but not a whole lot, but loved breads. I don't remember her overeating or eating all the time, but I never saw her cheat on being vegetarian. If you go all-natural and don't eat processed sugar, you'll probably loose weight. But if you eat healthy and exercise whether or not you're vegetarian, you'll lose weight.
I'm not going to comment on your motives, however. I'll let the other people responding have fun with that one.

Where does the global warming come in? Sorry, I'm loosing you there!
And although it is great you are vegetarian, be aware that being a vegetarian can also add a lot of weight if you don't watch a balanced diet. Too many carbs in combination with high fat cheese can settle on your hips in no time. Try to to avoid very fat dairy products and add low-fat tofu and lots of vegetables, fruit and salads to your diet, plus avoid white flour and sugar.
