. . . I'm new to the whole being an enviornmentalist deal... so if anyone can school me on how to get started in making some entry-level changes in my life for now, that would be great. Or some basic do's and dont's, or, well, anything at this point. Thanx!

Not only do they have no clue on what effect a warmer climate might have, but they also have no clue on what might be causing a warmer climate.

Yet they preach their "man is causing global warming" gospel with violence. And one of their tenants was that hurricanes would increase in number and ferocity.

NO HURRICANES at all last year

NO HURRICANES made landfall this year either

The science is settled, global warming is mostly man made. Why do you think people continue to deny the facts?

A recent study showed that rising ozone levels could cut crop yields by 40% by the year 2100.

Apparently human fossil fuel use is causing ozone levels to increase. Is ozone simply another biproduct of combustion? What specifically are the main sources of ozone emissions?

Ignoring other problems with Svensmark's galactic cosmic ray (GCR) theory discussed here:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As6MMc8lLk5ZrMSOAhywS77sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20071030112550AA7AXSu

The main problem with the theory is that the GCR flux has had no long-term trends while global warming has accelerated rapidly:

http://www.realclimate.org/images/TheChillingStars.jpg

A more plausible attribution is total solar irradiance, but it cannot account for much of the warming either.

"...this would lead to a net warming not more than 0.062 deg.C. And that is the most generous estimate possible, using the ACRIM composite, the 2-sigma upper bound on the trend rate, and allowing for all the warming to be already in effect with no delay due to thermal inertia. The actual global warming over the time interval in question is, in fact, in excess of 0.5 deg.C.

Can anyone provide an alternative scientific explanation?

b) Filling the pot with cool water (thus not wasting any), but it will have a longer heating time and use up more energy?

There appear to be a number of problems with the Svensmark & Friis-Christensen GCR global warming theory. A new and good discussion here:

http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2007/10/cosmic-rays-don%e2%80%99t-die-so-easily/

The biggest one being that there has been no long-term trend in GCR flux

http://www.realclimate.org/images/TheChillingStars.jpg

"In addition, there is no evidence of any long-term trend in the low cloud cover, and the GCR-hypothesis has a problem with explaining the trend in the diurnal cycle, enhanced warming in the Arctic and a cooling in the stratosphere."

On top of that, "the physical link between any ultra-small particles and much larger the cloud condensation nuclei is still lacking, even after the experiment performed in Copenhagen. Thus, the hypothesis is still speculative."

This theory seems to be fraught with problems, especially in comparison to the AGW theory. So why do people find it a more convincing explanation?

Recently I had a dog turn on my son, this dog was raised with 8 kids never hurt any one then one day when he went to pet him the dog grabbed his neck and took him down, thank god I was there, but then I keep hearing of all these other dogs turning, there was a 6 month old baby that was killed by her dog, with in seconds, then there was the woman who was killed by 2 dogs out side of her apt., I could keep going, but it's defeating my point, have you witnessed your pet going crazy for no reason lately, and you think global warming has anything to do with it?

There is a very interesting discussion of these 2 TSI measurements here:

http://tamino.wordpress.com/2007/07/27/pmod-vs-acrim-part-2/

which points out:

"One of the greatest sources of difficulty in matching up the various satellite data sets is the “ACRIM gap.” The lauch of ACRIM II was delayed, due to the shuttle Challenger explosion, so there is a roughly 2-year gap between the end of the ACRIM I data set and the beginning of ACRIM II, from early/mid-1989 to late 1991. However, two different data sets are available which overlap both missions: HF (Nimbus 7) and ERBS. Unfortunately, these two show different trends during the ACRIM gap. Depending on which one accepts as more reliable, one gets decidedly different results when joining ACRIM I to ACRIM II."

Willson & Mordvinov (2003, Geophysical Research Letters, vol. 30, pg. 1199) conclude that ACRIM is the more accurate composite, but the author here argues that PMOD is better.

Anyone know of another argument for either?

An interesting discussion here:

http://tamino.wordpress.com/2007/07/24/pmod-vs-acrim/

Using ACRIM concludes:

"A better idea would be to fit a trend line to the residuals, which yields a slope of 0.01 W/m^2/yr, or 0.1 W/m^2/decade...If that trend were sustained throughout the 28-year duration of the data, it would lead to a net secular increase in TSI of 0.31 W/m^2, which would cause an increase in climate forcing of 0.076 W/m^2. That’s only marginally bigger than the climate forcing due to anthropogenic power generation. At a climate sensitivity of 0.75 deg.C/(W/m^2), it would lead to a net global temperature rise of 0.06 deg.C, far smaller than what is observed. Even using the ACRIM composite, satellite estimates of TSI will not support the idea that TSI changes are responsible for modern global warming."

Does anyone dispute the conclusion that neither TSI (total solar irradiance) composite can account for a significant fraction of the recent climate forcing?

Computer models break down with the number and uncertainty of parameters. Climate models have MANY parameters that are VERY hard to quantify. This is why weather models break down rendering weather predictions of more than a few days unreliable.

Please leave any infomation you have on the subject. what you think, why, scientific evidence......(not just the rantings of crazies like Al Gore please).
