It makes sense to me that oil companies would see new fuels as a serious threat, so much so that they pay under the table to stall research. This is probably a naive question, but why does it take so long to create a fuel that machines can run on that can be produced in large supply and is less damaging to the environment than oil?

How could these destructive wildfires have been prevented? Who is at fault? Should housing been permitted in fireprone hillsides all over S. California?

While global warming is getting much of the news, I was wondering if the real disaster manking is facing is realy oxygen depletion?
When I went to grade school I was taught that air was 20% O2, then in college it was 18%, now I have heard 16%. If these are true and if humans pass out at levels under 14% it would seem we don't have as long to correct our CO2 emissions before civilization will fall.
So what do you think will cause civilizations fall, global warming, O2 depletion, some other man made disaster or some natural disaster?

I'll be the first to tell you that an individual weather event doesn't tell you anything about global warming. However, look at all the extreme weather trends we're seeing in the US right now:

A huge drought in the southeastern states, along with droughts in the southwest and northwest:

http://www.drought.unl.edu/dm/monitor.html

The drought in the southwestern states which has already lasted 10 years is expected to last for 90 more:

http://www.livescience.com/environment/070405_southwest_drought.html

Increased numbers of severe wildfires in the western states, most recently the San Diego wildfires:

Taken all together, could these extreme weather events be indicative of global warming?

What are your thoughts about global warming?

A few decades ago we were warned of a growing hole in the ozone layer. We responded by reducing CFC emissions, and have essentially solved the problem.

In 1999 we were warned of potential computer crashes due to the Y2K bug. We responded by fixing the computer software and solved the problem.

In the 1970s few scientists warned of an imminent ice age

http://www.wmconnolley.org.uk/sci/iceage/

but one crude climate simulation (supported by a computer program witten by James Hansen) showed that if sulfur dioxide emissions continued to increase at the rate they had been as of 1970, they could eventually trigger an ice age.

This was a reasonable conclusion, because the SO2 emissions had been causing global cooling from 1940-1970, but our SO2 emissions peaked in 1980 and have been declining ever since. See pages 12-14 here:

http://www.pnl.gov/main/publications/external/technical_reports/PNNL-14537.pdf

So again we solved the problem.

Is this not the case for CO2 now?

Fires have risen by 70 % in the last ten years. At the moment, we have out-of-control blazes throughout Southern California. We have extreme drought in the Southern States that could lead to even more fires. A report on CNN stated that a majority of firefighters believe the rise in fires is caused by Global Warming. One expert interviewed stated that, the fires in the West are burning so hot that within a few years, the forest may be desert, because it will not reforest itself.

If firefighters, who should know, believe in Global Warming, why should the Bush Administration, who are only politicians, be so set against it. Is it because of the number of oil barons in the Administration, with carbon emissions blamed for the problem? Is it time for the United States to join other countries in the battle against this Scourge which, if left unchecked, can damage or even destroy our planet?

Seriously, people, this could damage your kids by making them paranoid. Take heed, I am 32 and I have a mortal fear of storms because my mom rushed me to the basement everytime in stormed. A 32 year old male.

You'll eff your kids up by telling them about this crap and they'll be basket cases by the time they are my age.

As a side note, I don't believe in global warming but anything that stops storms is OK by me!

This was a online poll for my local newspaper. Out of about 1200 responses 50% did not believe in global warming. I was absolutely shocked because I believe it is very real.

So I wanted to take this poll where it was available to a more diverse group of people. Just curious to see if the responses would change.

Anderson Cooper said on TV last night that the California fires were caused by Global Warming. I lived in California for yrs and seen many fires like the one going on now. I seen them 40-50 yrs ago the only difference now is that there are a lot more houses in California than there were then. I think that people have went Global Warming nuts what do you think?

2007-10-23 02:48:09 · 15 answers · asked by Anonymous in Global Warming

I know i'm ignorant, so please correct that for me. I really don't see what is so hard about putting out fires, like in California now. Why don't they just dig ditch around it and fill it with water, or at least cut down trees on the border so there is a gap. I know the wind carries a bit but....
Also why does California have so many wild fires?
Thank you
