* "Approximately 80% of our air pollution stems from hydrocarbons released by vegetation, so let's not go overboard in setting and enforcing tough emission standards from man-made sources." - Ronald Reagan

I just found it to be an interesting quote, and even if there is a percentage of air pollution comes from vegetation, it would be quite amazing

Reagan also wanted to include catsup as a vegetable for school lunches. Just consider the source.

Every answer heretofore (except jack h's) has been based on the presumptions that vegetation is the earth's filter, not its polluter, and/or that President Reagan couldn't possibly have been correct. Sorry to bring science to a politically correct prejudice-sharing session, but vegetation synthesizes lots of hydrocarbons, most notably terpenes. As a French study (see source below) of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) notes, "Isoprene and monoterpenes produced mainly by vegetation are among the most abundant natural VOCs." Makes me want to get out my chainsaw and help save the environment. Like the t-shirt (http://www.thoseshirts.com/reagan.html ) says, "Viva La Reagan Revolucion!"

He sure did. And the man was criticised for lack of smarts. His knowledge of forestry & wise use was prophetic--especially in light of refusing to subscribe to the green zealots goal of saving everything. Man has some needs too-must be a balance. He used common sense which is lacking in politics today.
The horrific fires sweeping California are fueled by trees-trees that should have been used wisely. Trees like cars produce hydrocarbons, a key ingredient of smog. There are 3 sides to every story-yours, mine, and the truth. Our society has a major problem arriving at the latter because we are close-minded and too GD dogmatic.
Good question and the start of great discussions-maybe!I think he was a great president but what does a Canuck know?

This is the man who tried to have ketchup reclassified as a vegetable to save money. The man seemed to have had a problem with plant life.
"I don't believe a tree is a tree and if you've seen one you've seen them all."
"Trees cause more pollution than automobiles."
And I'm sure there's more.
He was a personable man, and I mean no disrespect to the man, but sometimes what came out of his mouth was memorable for all the wrong reasons.

I don't have any proof, but I'm pretty sure that statement is bullcrap. Vegetation is the Earth's air filter, not it's polluter.
It sounds like Reagan was trying to protect corporations' profits by convincing people that trees cause birth defects and asthma, not radioactive smog coming out of smoke stacks from the companies that bribed him.

Reagan was notorious for getting the facts wrong. He insisted he served in World War II when he never did leave the U.S. He claimed to have taken part in an important battle or rescue--which he did only in the movies.

Not sure of the percentage but here is something refering to organic compounds from vegetation. The environmental / global warming crowd arch enemy is Ronaldus Magnus.
From the link
Chemical analyses revealed that as much as 90% of the organic fraction was polar in nature. Infrared analysis of the PM2.5 was also consistent with the presence of significant levels of polar carbonyl and hydroxyl functional groups. The polar nature of the organic fraction was further supported by the observation that about 20% of the liquid water concentrations was associated with the organic fraction of PM2.5. The importance of polar multifunctional oxygenates in the PM2.5 is also supported by mass spectra data that were consistent with the presence of a wide range of classes of polar oxygenates, among them oxo monocarboxylic acids, trihydroxy monocarboxylic acids, dihydroxy dicarboxylic acids, hydroxy dicarboxylic acids, normal dicarboxylic acids, oxo dicarboxylic acids, methoxy dicarboxylic acids, tricarboxylic acids, triols, and SOA products of -pinene and toluene. In particular, five secondary organic aerosol compounds, observed in a smog chamber irradiation of an -pinene/NOx/air mixture were detected in ambient PM2.5, thus providing new biomarkers for identifying the contributions of biogenic hydrocarbons to PM2.5 concentrations by SOA formation.
Dad sure has a worped memory. If he had any honesty he would remember that the 80s were a great time. Reagan didn't starve anyone. What an idiotic statement.

That old turds dead and gone a long time ago . Why would you even listen to the worse president that bankrupted our nation and let thousands starve . Do you even remember the recession? The unemployment line went around the building 3 times . You couldn't get a job shoveling poop . The guy was a an idiot . Not only that he was a crappy actor.
edit ; " Jim z ", Talk about idiotic statements the recession started in1981 it was almost a depression and the fool president Reagan didn't admit it until a year later . Maybe you was to young to be in the work force at that time or was born with a silver spoon in your mouth what ever the case you sure the hell wasn't there . I remember it well trying to feed 2 kids on crap. Learn your history.
Come on Edwin when Carter was in every one was working . Reagan got in no one was working . Money is only worth what you believe its Worth and Reagan believed it wasn't worth nothing . Reagan just couldn't handle the pressure so he created his own world . And the hostages so what Bush got in and we had an attack on our home land . Remember 911 . If your going to point your finger at terrorism i guess your going to have to point your finger at Bush for that one or was that Clinton's fault . It doesn't matter who's president Terrorism is going to happen to the best of presidents. Don't get me wrong I'm all for Bush hes doing a fine job considering whats all going on in the world.

His protoge Bush said that if we saved the endangered owl, we would be knee deep in those who. Look, Reagen made deals with the Iranian and the contras and didn't tell anyone about it, what'll stop him from makeing deals with car companies and not telling anyone about it.
These words came from the enginneer of the trickle down theory, and people are expected to take it seriously

Off-point but I think "dad" has confused Carter with Reagan. It was under Carter that we had double-digit inflation and interest rates and 59 American citizens held hostage for over a year. It was under Reagan that tax rates were cut and the economy exploded with growth.
Nobody who wasn't anorexic starved when Reagan was President. I'm so darned sick and tired of all the liberal nonsense spewed by people who are completely clueless and refuse to actually check the record.
