A landfill company supplied me with the amount of recyclables they picked up in cubic yards for 1/2 year, and tons for the other 1/2 of the year. I need the numbers to be the same for the entire year, so I would like to convert the cubic yards to tons ultimately. The material is paper/cardboard and I don't know the density. Can this conversion be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I cannot find this information anywhere.

Al Gore has spoken: The world must embrace a "carbon-neutral lifestyle." To do otherwise, he says, will result in a cataclysmic catastrophe. "Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb," warns the website for his film, An Inconvenient Truth. "We have just 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tailspin." and yet he has four houses ; a 10,000 sf, 20 room, 8 bathroom mansion in Nashville (just for Tipper and him) but that's not enough, they also have a 4,000 sf home in Arlington, VA, a home in Carthage, TN and a BRAND new high rise condo in San Mancisco. Additionally he flies around in a private jet, doesn't drive a hybrid and has mineral rights ($20k per month from Pasminco Zinc Mines) to the zinc mine that is under his house - this mine pollutes the local ground water. If he genuinely believes the apocalyptic vision he has put forth and calls for radical changes in the way other people live, why hasn't he made any radical change in his life? Giving up the zinc mine or one of his homes is not asking much, given that he wants the rest of us to radically change our lives.

Consider areas that have many trees (ex. Northeast/Midwest)

With the urban tree removal on the rise (and with people saying..."hmm, I will get those trees taken out soon")

Do you think that in say...100 - 200 years, Northeast will start looking more like LA area or some other - deforested area?

Limestone, an underlying material for many soils, dissolves and corrodes when exposed to high concentrations of hydrogen ions. How is this information important in understanding the effects of acid precipitation?

i'm just wonderin'-- the last time there was such an eruption was Toba nealy a century ago-- about the same time the Ice Age started. So here's my question--should a supervolcano erupt, will we die as it might cause another Ice Age?

I have been hearing that Global Warming is actually a myth made up in the '80's and that it is completely untrue, but was created to access additional funding. Does anyone have a scientific answer about this? Is it really a potential threat or just an old wives tale to make people more environmentally conscience and to get funding for scientific research?

There is so many excuses for not fixing a problem. Landfills are a big problem for the environment and since ALL the trash can be processed(at a profit mine you)into useful raw material it seems very bad management not to replace the landfill. Bad engineering made the landfill and good engineering can develop a simple process to fix this ugly blight on the planet. Its not one place or state but every state all over the world. Trash has real value if it is processed efficiently. I know-it can't be done, right?

The way to process trash that now goes into landfills while very huge in scale is very simple in how it works. Even though no one has ever processed trash in a cost efficient manner that in no way means it can't be done. Unsorted trash can be processed with great efficiency IF good engineering is used. This has never been done so I don't understand the "it can't be done" response to this detail. Landfills are vile enough to eliminate.

I've heard from some people saying global warming "doesn't exist". What are some other arguements against the validity of global warming? Any possible objections or counter arguements?

I'm writing up a paper on global warming...so I was wondering how someone could argue against my point of global warming being an important issue.
