A landfill company supplied me with the amount of recyclables they picked up in cubic yards for 1/2 year, and tons for the other 1/2 of the year. I need the numbers to be the same for the entire year, so I would like to convert the cubic yards to tons ultimately. The material is paper/cardboard and I don't know the density. Can this conversion be done? Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I cannot find this information anywhere.

You need to know the density to do the conversion, because a cubic yard rock is a lot heavier than a cubic yard of wood which is itself a lot heavier than a cubic yard of Styrofoam.

Hope these sites give you a little insight... Try googling specifically what you need to know; odds are you will find what you need (or darn close!!)
