One way to eliminate the need for landfills is to have 100% recyclable food packaging. Another way is to somehow have 100% biodegradable food packaging if possible and the packaging would not be picked up by a trash collector but stored and put in your garden. A third way is to not have food packaging. Back during the medieval era food was sold without packaging, everybody farmed or was nobility and there was not problems with tons of trash. People would eat in restaurants as opposed to going to the grocery store to buy packaged foods.
Also a trash compactor in the home helps reduce the physical space trash will take up, and possibly a small incinerator in the home in the next few decades might help eliminate the strain on landfills.

Do you all watch discover channel or not???? They just had on a special the other night about landfills. It was a good idea of using it for a city park after they were done and also piping out all the methane gas to power a nearby electric plant instead of using fossil fuels.
But I do agree about waste anymore. There is way to much packing on any consumer goods and also there isn't enough places to recycle your items. I live in a SMALL town that barely has high speed internet and believe me there is no place to recycle items around here. Not unless I make a 60 mile drive.

landfills can be useful. for example, large sections of Manhattan are built on landfill.
but the VAST VAST VAST majority of the time, you are right, landfills are disgusting wasteful and harmful black eyes on every location the inhabit.
it is a problem that needs to be addressed, but currently our society doesn't seem to be too concerned with them, they are more concerned with gas efficient cars, trans fats, and recycling.
i think you are right, but at the same time, the reason nothing is happening is simply because of laziness and apathy towards the problem.
if you feel passionate enough about this issue, i would suggest petitioning, protesting, do what your have the right to do and change things!
you have the power to do it, so why don't you!
it can be done, that's what is beautiful about our nation!
good luck, i hope for my generations sake that you are very successful in your goals!

I agree, while some trash has to be disposed of so much of it can be recycled and/or used for other purposes. The city I live in doesn't even offer a recycling program while the town I came from did and was 1/3 the size.

The reason for landfills is quite simple, because people are not responsible with their garbage, a lot of them end up throwing away stuff that if we BURNED it, it would release CFC's which destroy our ozone, so, landfills are the safest way of processing garbage without killing ourselves!

Your premise is wrong. Landfills have tremendous value to me - otherwise my property would be full of garbage.
The reason that there are landfills instead of waste processing is that it isn't currently economical to do so.
