You need to be more specific. I'll just start with the local area. Drought weakens the local pine trees allowing pine beetles to infest and kill them. You can tell this is the problem because you will start seeing a lot of pines browning at the ends of the needles and eventual the hole tree dies. There are also various diseases and insects that naturally kill trees.

It depends on the specific situation. For example, inGlacier National Park, many trees are being killed by a fungus that didn't exist in the area a few decades ago (The masses of ice kept the temperature down far enough that this particular fungus couldn't live there). however, global warming has melted the glaciers enough that the area is now warm enough for the fungus to survive--so its infecting trees in the area.

Wood-boring insects like the Japanese Beetle and termites and so on can kill trees.
