Environment - November 2006

I know that the magnetic field of earth( North and south poles) will eventually flip. My question is that if they flip, will it be over a week, a year, 10000 years? and what effect will it have on humans and animals? I have heard and radiation, and birds getting confused. other than that, is there anything that might effect life on earth on a large scale? I also heard that the axis of rotation might swtich. Is this true? if it is, what effect will this have in life? Thanks sooooooooo much!

I have an ecology project I'm working on for my science class and I could use some help. My ecological concern is how animals are disrupting urban residences (Ex: raccoons in trash cans, deer in your backyard) in which they've formerly occupied before that area became a sub-division. For my project, I need to know who supports limiting housing growth to allow animals to retain their natural habitats. On the other hand, I need to know who opposes the supporters' view and believes we should liberally build houses to sustain the growth in human population. Names of groups/organizations would be good; however, names of celebrities/well-known persons would be better. If you can help me, please provide a source. Thank you for all your help!

I work at a Wastewater Treatment Facility. We have a humid warm building that is FULL of spiders, I mean, there is hundreds of them. There are also a lot of "filter flies" in this building which give the spiders lots of food. Because the water in the building is being released to a river, I need an environmentally safe way to kill the spiders.

I've notice that every exhibition ppl are giving out flyers and pamplets. isn't the gov is look at enviromental hazard thing. y are ppl still wasting so much paper when we are looking on saving the trees. and also all those flyers and pamplets always end up in the trash cans of scatering all around the floor. can such things be done to safe more trees and our enviroment are getting more hazard and mre and more ppl are getting sick, we also had too much new viruses and sickess. can the enviromental ppl do something about it. even the reefs under the water is also dying.

I've heard of electric vehicles being referred to as "Zero Emission" because there is no pollution given off from them. But if the vehicle is recharged with electricity generated from a coal-fired power plant, isn't that pollution?

I work @ a plant that burns waste? We got a truck load of PCB's in. I did an analysis on the sample, figured it to be PCBs, and rejected the truck. My boss told me not to reject the waste, do a 100 x dilution and run it again. Obviously nothing was to be detected. We continued offloading this waste until another worker discovered it was PCBs. So we started rejecting the waste and sent a sample to an outside lab for analyis. It came back positive for PCBs. How do I report my supervisor because now we have been burning PCBs for a week?

I am very concerned about the enviroment and believe that just doing little things can help a great deal, but how do I get the people around me informed and doing something witouth sounding like an eco maniac? I am in the military and would like my base to be more enviromentally counsious, by just taking simple measures, but I need to come up with a good proposal, how do I do that?
