Yes, decomposing organic matter gives off CO2 as a normal bi-product of decomposition.♥

When we start focusing on all co2 as a problem then we lose sight of what is really going on. When plants release co2 it is part of the current earth balance of the last 500 thousand years or more. Where we need to be concerned is the ancient stores of co2 from 400 million years ago when the planet was a different world. Because when we burn ancient sunlight we are in turn upsetting the earthly balance of which humans evolved to survive in.
Also if you do your own composting then is doesn't have to go to a landfill and become part of a modern Superfund sight for the future.

A cubic foot of wood will release the same amount of CO2 weather u burn it or bury it.
Get off this CO2 stupidity it has not increased and will not. We have a friend green plants that take in CO2 and give us back oxygen. at present there is not enough CO2 for most sensors to measure . the better sensors will measure 1 to 2 parts per million.
We must change this bad CO2 thinking as our good friends the green plants need CO2 as we do oxygen .

Yes - especially plants! Same is true for burning - that's why fossil fuels (which are the remains of ancient plants) contribute so much CO2 to the atmosphere.

The problem gas from decomposition is methane (CH4). If this is released into the atmosphere it causes more problems than CO2.

Plants emmit these gases during in the day so it may depend on the time of day.
