Do you think that State Standards and High Stakes Testing are forcing more schools to "teach to the test", thus leaving MORE students behind?

Which would any of you consider more practical: essay questions or multiple choice?
I'd say multiple choice, but that is just me.

I work in a secondary school where the pupils' behaviour is extraordinary. They swear, throw things and generally act like a load of ignorant brats. Every class has at least one with a "Behaviour and Social Emotional Difficulty", which is used as an excuse to act like an animal. Very few pupils seem to be interested in their education. Reading, writing and general knowledge seem very poor to my understanding. Discipline is a joke, with even the smallest achievement praised to the skies but the most dreadful behaviour excused. There is no respect, no urge to improve themselves, apart from a lonely few. I don't remember it being like this when I was a kid!

I'd like to become a teacher but I'm wondering if its worth it. Have I just described typical behaviour for kids today or am I just unfortunate enough to work at a real hell hole? Why does education today want to pathologise bad behaviour? Are we raising a nation of ignorant thugs? Give me some hope, please!

For those who don't know, a CODA is a Child of a Deaf Adult. I have been hired to teach this kid to read, but i'm not sure how to teach him. He didn't get read to in the "traditional" (hearing) way, he was signed to. He is hearing, just to clarify. How can I teach him to read phonetically, not just by rote. If you've had experience with this kind of situation, I really need your help. Thanks!

Last year (1st semester) I had all the hard teachers and I got B's and few A's. Then (2nd semester) I switched into all the "easy" less demanding teachers who give less work and have low expectations. (same classes, just different teachers).

I've noticed my GPA from a 3.5 to a 4.0 because of teacher change.

But I have also noticed I was not working hard for grades and learning nothing in class.

Some kids say it's better to have easy teachers, because easy teachers tend to be less demanding and more leniant. which can lower stress. They give students higher grades, which raises GPA and "class rank"

Some kids say it's better to get harder teachers, even though they can give you a lower grade, make you work, and lower your GPA and class rank; because harder teachers tend to prepare you for the SAT and ACT. They also say easy teacher don't teach you as much and won't prepare you for college.

I would like to know if you can live on 35,000 dollars a year if you are just fresh out of college and you are a Teacher. Because that's what I want to be when I grow up and that is how much Teacher's make around here. I would like to know if Teacher's can support themselves like live in a nice apartment, drive a decent car, and have a little extra money. I would really appreciate your advice! I don't want to give up my dream of becoming a Teacher but I don't want to be really poor either.

I always use these sticky notes to remind myself. Scotch Tape has held more of my student's works of art than I can count. These staples are the best. I have become attached to them. Acme poster boards have made my life so much easier. Where would I be without whiteout? Laminate me baby, I can take it.

I am a volunteer for a free tutoring program at my college and I was paired up with a 5th grader who needs help in reading. I love literature and I have no problem finding materials, but I'm having difficulty thinking of how to approach the sessions. Do I just listen to her read and correct her for two hours? I don't see how that would help or get her at all... Sessions start next week. HELP?!
