I teach college. I have one particular student that always tries to undermine me, correct me, point out something like "Yes, but isn't it the case that......" basically it makes me feel defensive! What can I do? This is college, so I feel I cannot chastize him like I would a high schooler by saying, "Are you the teacher?" Plus he is way out of his league; most of the things he says are completely irrelevant or not even correct. I teach Latin.

For instance, the Afro-Americans ,the peoplewho were brutally enslaved by the slave trade now seek to go back to Islam-which is really another brutal form of cruelty. Why can these people go back to their ancient religion of the true Africans and thus aim to free themselves to be thier own? Whan are they ever going to be free rather than be proxy Muslims? The converts do not realise that they have nothing in common with the founder of Islam. Comments kindly please.

So far, I have given my students a site map to use whenever they come across descriptions of different places in the story. Everyday I give them a bit more information they can use like the characterization of the main characters and a symbol here and there. What else can I do to peak their interests?

I'm sick of being ignored when asking to learn something I know absolutely nothing about. "Well, if you don't know, how can we help?" Hell, if I knew, chances are I wouldn't be asking for the help.
People will explain things to me and expect me to understand what they've said. Then, if I don't understand, they insist I'm not listening. People just don't want to help those who are on a much slower track than those who whisk by with little or no effort at all.
How does one keep up when it's difficult to understand what is said? It doesn't matter what the subject is. I'm tired of "Be more specific." It isn't just 1 or 2 things. It's in general, everyday things. How to look up & find things in the newspaper, how to search in the phone book, understanding when others describe things, telling us to change the installments on the computer to which socket/ plug in, reading a map, how to figure out how to read a city bus map; I can read, but I don't get the pattern set up, etc....

I teach writing at the college level. What is the balance between teacher-talk and student talk during group activities and classwork? How over-rated is the ideal of the "student-centered" classroom? Is it simply a teaching fad that will pass, or is there something fundamentally substantive in its theory?

I'm a middle school teacher at a private school right now, but just can't stand my job anymore because of the mean rich parents who think they own the place and like to yell at and insult us poor teachers when their kids get a low grade or misbehave in school. But I do love working in a school, and would love to be able to do something school-related that doesn't involved dealing with evil parents. (But not janitor or administration or anything like that...I don't know, there probably isn't anything else...) I like having summers off, too, so I can be at home with my kids... Any ideas?
Thanks!! :)

Houston Texas is passing a law that will charge a parent $500 and 30 days in jail if they miss a parent teacher meeting.I know that alot of parents really dont care about their kids and dont want to be bothered going to school to see how their kid/kids are doing in school. The $500 will be used in classes for supplies.Do you think this law to be is good?
