I am a teacher and I have my cell phone on during class. If it rings I check to see who is calling. If it is not the nursing home where my parents reside nor the elementary school where my grandson attends I do not answer it. I am the contact person for my elderly parents. If an emergency arises I must be informed. LIkewise I am the legal guardian for my grandson. If a 13 year old has these responsibilities and would screen their calls in the same manner, I would not object to them having their cell phones on in class either. But alas that is not the case. After 51 years of life, 30 years of teaching, 8 years of college, a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree, let's hope there is some privilege to being a teacher.

My husband is a teacher and he is not allowed to have a cell phone in class. I don't know about other schools. As far as equality? Students should not be allowed to have or use cell phones in class. That's ridiculous. What little respect there is left for the teachers would be completely gone, not to mention the distraction in class. There are things an adult can do and a kid is not allowed. That's how it is. More freedom, more responsibility.

Of course it is not equal, but who says teachers and students are equal? I don't think a teacher should just take out his/her cell phone and have a conversation in the middle of class, but sometimes things happen and you need your phone.

Cell phones dont belong in the classroom at all- if a teacher needs one for emergency calls that's more understanding than a student having one for any reason. My mother had two professors who were married and she took both their classes and they each constantly called each other during class, and this was in graduate school. People need to remain professional, its a good example for students to follow

Teachers shouldn't be using a cell phone in class. But if they chose to do so, yes it's equal because they are the ADULT and the students are NOT.

I agree with you.

Teacher shouldn't. I am a teacher. I leave mine in my office when I come to the class room. Nothing is that important that it cannot wait. I strictly enforce no cell in class policy.

It is time your teacher apologized for the distraction.

To ask if something is equal--a student is not equal to a teacher. Perhaps one should ask if something is fair.

I don't know so much as in equal. However it did kinda "honked" off when my 7 year old told me that his teachers husband called he 5 times and she yelled at them to "shut up" because she couldn't hear him...
