You can also obtain a certificate once you complete all the conditions. What is important is you need to check out if the certificates are recognized by other Universities and States. What you miss out is dynamic interaction with teachers and students.

I hope to learn things that I didnt have the opportunity of learning before
I hope to do work via distance because I cannot attend Uni full time or cannot get to the campus, so online helps

although its way harder online as you really need to commit yourself to studying without the distractions of the tv in the background, the telephone or friends/family chatting etc
