Advantages: Sometimes they deter crime.
Disadvantages: Sometimes they screw up and shoot innocent people.

I think that you can answer this question yourself- it's a really easy one.
Think about the following:
How would America be different without police officers?
would there be more robberies, murders, etc....
If you were lost in a dangerous city at night and were about to be attacked and a police officer walked up, would you be glad to see him/her?
Disadvantages are that the police sometimes get an attitude that they are above the law, so sometimes they abuse their powers.
