I think it depends on the student and his/her learning style and how well the classroom/program is set up. My husband has taught face-to-face and online and taken classes through both mediums. He prefers online, but I've heard others say the opposite. But it seems like online education is the wave of the future....

It depends on the age of the student. For primary students face-to-face learning is best, as the teacher is able to assess immediately where the student needs help.

For older students (7th grade through post graduate education) it becomes a matter of interest and focus. Online learning works best for students who are highly motivated independent learners and who are not easily distracted. For others, the face-to-face classroom or lecture hall discussions may provide more stimulation for learning.

Students learn more by doing than listening. So your face in front of them doesn't really help them learn much. Face 2 face is great in small groups where students are communicating with instructor and with each other.

On-line learning, if executed correctly should utilize simulation which is a powerful tool for learning. Students remember and learn much of what they write (or type). Face to face they ofter are just copying notes, and not internalizing. Having them communicate electronically, I think helps then think through their questions and formulate better answers.

I teach small lab environments and lecture. I find lectures aren't meant to teach but to state topics not for real learning.
