Yes, you can live a decent life on 35,000 a year. It depends on who you are, what you like, and your situation. For example, if you are a person that has always dreamed of driving a Mercedes Benz and living in a 300-400,000 house, it will be very hard. As far as situation, you could have parents that could help with luxury things such as cars, etc. I had a teacher and she was just out of college, but she drove a brand new Lexus. I was like Whoa! teachers can live an expensive lifestyle even if they do not make much money. Come to find out her father was a well-to-do business owner. So it all depends. Teachers can make up to 60,000+ after many years of teaching, as in like 30 years. You can teach and have the lifestyle that you want, but you may have to just wait on some things. Follow your heart, if you want to be a teacher, be a teacher, you will love how you live. I am facing this same situation right now, and my whole question of teaching as a career was the pay. I have ultimately decided to get my degree in another major other than education, but I will get my alternative teaching certificate. You may even want to consider this path if you are questioning the money factor. So if you decide not to teach because of the money, then you will have something to fall back on. Always, always follow your heart and pursue your dreams. I hope that I have helped you because I have pondered the same situation for a whole two years!!!!!

It's not so much a matter of what you make, but how good you are at financial planning, investing and budgeting. You can make 35,000 and still live comfortably if you are smart in these areas. Learn as much as you can about them. Also, make sure your credit is good. This will allow you to get a loan to buy a nice apartment and do all of the things you mentioned.
Also, teachers can start at 35,000 but earn up to 80,000 after having gained experience working. I know this is the earning potential in NY and CA, probably in other states as well.
I'm a teacher and live comfortably in NYC. I'm not rich, but my compensation is the satisfaction on feel in knowing that I'm helping to better lives.

This will depend somewhat on where you live - big city, small city, town, etc. A starting salary of $35,000 USD should be quite adequate to live comfortably on, if you start your career in a small city or a town, because the cost of living - especially apartments - will be lower. And, of course, set your sights on a small used car, not a new one, to begin with. There are many excellent used cars available - particularly the Japanese brands. Check Consumer Reports for unbiased info on their reliability. I recently bought a 1996 Honda that I'm very pleased with. (I'm a retired teacher, by the way. My starting salary was $5000 back in 1963, and I drove a 1959 Oldsmobile.)

It depends on your lifestyle and what you are willing to do to fit into that budget. I commented to your last question and said that I am poor. But making $35,000 a year would be totally different for me! I am in my 3rd year of teaching and my salary is only $23,000. I would LOVE to be making $35,000.
But don't let salary be your only criteria. If you really feel that you are being called to be a teacher, then don't give up on that! The rewards of teaching can be great, even when the money isn't!
