This would be for a head start program for three and four year olds, I think I have a good shot because I have a four year degree in elementary and special education and it only required a two year degree.

Our school district has adopted the idea of restorative discipline, which means students who act out or have problems aren't given consequences or punished in any way (unless for fighting, drugs, weapons, etc.) We are asked to counsel the students and try to build relationships with them to promote better behavior. I have no problem at all with talking to kids, trying to get to know them, and giving them some support. Some kids, though, respond negatively to that. When that happened in the past, I would back off and give the student respect, but we're constantly told by the administration to be persistent with the students. We also don't have any consequences at all. One kid pushed an autistic girl on the floor, spit on someone at lunch, shot teachers with a laser pointer, made sexual comments to girls in our school, and caused problems in almost every class, for over five months. He hasn't received a single detention, suspension, etc. Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Look, if your going to give me a whole speech, about why this is wrong, then please don't write.
My Biology teacher, is the meanest thing, the 11th and 10th graders already got rid of her, and us, the 9th graders are stuck with her.
It's not fair! She gave me an F, for no reson, we had to write about genetics and include some words in it, and I defined the words, instead of including them in the essay, and she said to draw a diagram on cell replication, and I did that! ANd she gave me an F! I should have least gotten a C.
Then she puts me ALL the way in the back of the classroom, I an't even see the board!
I really don't understand her, my whole class hates her.
\WHat can we do to get back at her?

I have subbed for a few years in local school districts and I need to update and resend out my resumes. Last year, I actually drove all around to hand deliver them, but I'm not sure that it made that big of a difference. Can I just mail them to the districts or do they frown on that?

Hi all, I am a preschool teacher studying to make the move into elementary teaching. I am conducting a little research on the following questions (they are related):

How can I establish rules and authority in my classroom when I am not a commanding and authoritative person?

How can I make mutual respect and feelings of safety and community a motivator for good behavior?

How can I create an atmosphere of safety, comfort, and openness with my students?

Your anwers will be so appreciated. Let me know your credentials, also, if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks a lot!

My school is having a family fun night, and I am donating a basket that is to be raffled off. I want to do something creative. Popular themes are movie night, bath stuff, or a craft basket. I'd like to do something different and need some ideas. Ideas must be family friendly, but it can be tailored exclusively for adults or children.

I work as an English teacher in a private school and sometimes I tend to use humour while explaining difficult points to pupils or let them ask "funny questions" ,in other words, queries that aren't serious enough to be uttered (likely to excite laughter) but could really trouble the pupils' mind. I thought that humour was a clever way to attract their attention and make the lesson less boring. And it worked! The pupils loved it! However, my superiors don't want to hear pupils laughing; they want me to teach English in a more serious tone. Ultimately, I'm going to comply with their suggestions but deep inside I don't want to; I thought that using humour at times was a positive thing.

I don't use humour at the expense of the learning process.
I do take pains to present and explain the material accurately and in detail. I just use it as a means to facilitate and/or reinforce knowledge.

I need websites about the best methods to teach children reading. Here's the catch: they cannot have a bias, such as religious or political to the point where it affects their opinion... and they must be credible sources. I need them for a research paper.

The hard part is acquiring non-biased, non-chatroom and blog discussions of Phonetics, phonics, etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've exhausted all resources, including yahoo answers, and let's just say what I found was um less than helpful. (Talking like a pirate, just say the sound, duh, move to the east coast, etc..)

Can anyone give any serious suggestions or is this question doomed for stupid answers?

My husband wants to learn Chinese which is smart - he's majoring in Marketing. But as a teacher, I'm not sure if I should pick a foreign language I like, or opt for Spanish or Latin. I intend on focusing on teaching K-5 with a preference on Preschoolers and Kindergarteners. But with the high rate of Spanish speaking people in the United States, I thought Spanish would be advantageous but I don't want to be pigeon-holed in ESOL programs.

Now the thought for my husband is that with the incredible growth of China as a world market (IMO it will surpass Japan fast), Chinese made for a good language to learn. I have a love for the show Firefly and the movie that followed, Serenity and would love to know what they said.

There’s other language out there too, if they would be useful, I'd be happy to hear about them. I'm limited by whatever my school teaches. We can choose between a language or Speaking. but I have a love for languages and would prefer to take them. Thanks for your input!

I am a teacher in a critical shortage area in Mississippi, and I am just curious about what others think about the teachers' low salaries. We teach the future doctors, lawyers, computer scientists, etc., yet we are the lowest paid of all careers. People tend to argue that we knew what we were getting into before we chose that career path and get mad if teachers go on strike because of the low salaries. They say, "We pay taxes, so they just need to do their jobs," yet, we, too, are taxpayers who donate to our own salaries. Many of us have families to take care of as well. As a taxpayer, I think it's time for a change in teachers' salaries...
