Good question. I think it is too exercise your brain. The way they are teaching math now sucks too. They switch it every 15 years.

Knowing algebra will give you a better idea of how basic math works. I know you already know basic math, but algebra can help you do it quicker. For example, I live in Taiwan and the exchange rate to the dollar is 33:1. Dividing by 33 to figure out how much it would be US dollars is a pain in the ***. But multiplying by 3 and then dividing by 100 is much easier and gives me close to the same answer. 1NTD/33.3 = 3NTD/100 = 1USD. Knowing algebra can help you think of those connections quicker and save time. Also, if live 10 miles away and you only 40 how long will it take you to get home? 10/h = 40; 1/h = 4; h=1/4; 1/4 and hour or 15 minutes.

Of course this is the easy algebra, but you get the picture

Whether you realize it or not you use algebra almost daily. Maybe not the long drawn out expressions you are learning in class, but general x+y=z. You use it to determine budgets, you use it to determine how long it will take you to get from point a to point b. If you ever have to lay carpet in a room or anything like that, you will use an algebraic expression.

Learning math is not a waste of time. Trust me, you use it more often than you realize.

You used the point that you are a drummer. Keeping time or maintaining a beat for throughout a song is mathematical. Perhaps not algebraic per se...but it could be. Like, if you want to have a song play evenly (and again this is just an example) you will need to know how long the song is, what the measure is, and how often you need to throw in a hi-hat or a bass kick. You may be a play it by ear musician, but to write music, you need to know math. If for nothing else but to keep your bank account in line when those royalties start coming in :)

What I want to know is, why you are still up so late if you are only 13? You are being taught alegbra not just because you should know about algebra, but also because you need to know how to learn algebra. As with learning other subjects that you think they might not matter, the education system is trying to give you a foundation of knowledge for you to build your future on. You never know what life will bring. One of my aunts was a chinese literature major in college but ended up being a computer programmer instead.

In algebra, you also sharpen your reasoning and analytically skills when solving problems, especially word problems. You also have to think critically when facing complicated algebratic (not sure if that's a word) equations. Don't get discouraged when it gets hard from time to time. The more problems you do, the easier it becomes. Hopes everything works out for you.

well there are other people besides you in the class...and you may not want to take algebra or you might not need it...but they do, and algebra isn't that bad anyway...if u know this math already you wouldn't be asking a question why you have to learn this anyway you would just think algebra was fine and dandy...goodluck with it...after u take algebra 1 your done usually
