I am a first year college student from California. I am pretty sure I want to finish out this year here and then move to Ghana to finish my schooling at the Universtiy of Ghana. My reasoning is that I feel the need to explore, I have grown up in a bubble of ignorance and I want to see new things. I want to get out of America. Africa has always been in my heart, because my sisters are from and are moving back to Africa, and I have always felt a strong connection to the continent. I want to make some kind of difference, and I am also hoping to join the Peace Corps after college. I guess my question is: Is Ghana the place for me, and what huge culture shocks would I encounter? Also, is the University of Ghana a challenging and exciting academic institution?

I am about get my diploma but in order to get into a state universtiy I would probably have to do a couple more courses and take the SATs over again ( i got a 1400 1st time). So I was thinking of going to a community college but I don't want to stay for a whole year. Is it possible to go to a community college for only a semester and then try to transfer to another school? And while in a community college do I have to take the courses I should be doing now in order to be considered for a state university?or can I just transfer with the hours done at a comm. college?

Is it possible to publish a journal article as an undergraduate university student? I had a person tell me I should publish a paper I originally did as a course research paper, for one of my course assignments. Personally I did not think it would be very likely for an undergraduate paper to be published. What do you think?

I'm in Sixth Form and in 2008 am hoping to get a scholarship and study in America. I've been in contact with a few uni's, but I'm still confused as to how I go about it. If anyone can give me some advice on this, or a link to a useful web page, I'd soooooo appreciate it. Thanks in advance! :-)

Many university/academic job applications (mostly post-doctoral) require you to outline your research plans briefly. How safe is it to give away your research plans? Is there an element of risk involved? E.g. other more established peers (who read your applications!) knowing and hence stealing your ideas before you can actually implement them. After all, by definition, they already have a job to pursue that research and you are still looking for one.
