I'm in Sixth Form and in 2008 am hoping to get a scholarship and study in America. I've been in contact with a few uni's, but I'm still confused as to how I go about it. If anyone can give me some advice on this, or a link to a useful web page, I'd soooooo appreciate it. Thanks in advance! :-)

There's a webpage made by the US government just for you. It's:

http://educationusa.state.gov/

It has information about the Student Visa and how to apply to Uni's as an international student.

There is no problem for an English student to come to the USA to attend university. There are over 500,000 foreign students studying each year in the USA. The admissions officers at most American colleges are familiar with the details of the English system and will be happy to email/talk to you about your application.

For the large majority of American universities, if you are a better-than average student you will have no problem being accepted. But if you want to go to one ofthe top schools the admissions standards are much harder.

The real problem is the money. PRivate universities in the USA (which includes nearly all the really famous ones) are very expensive. The normal fees and living costs for a year are $40,000 per year or more. For many schools if you are a very good student you can get a discount from that total.

Your best bet is probably to look for some of the public universities that exist in every state. Some of these have relatively small tuition fees and you might be able to get a much lower cost. You will have to look into them and check it out.

THere are over 4000 college campuses in the USA. The best known ones are listed in the Princeton Review website. And there are several reliable books that are printed yearly which give details about costs, programs, ranks and scores of entering students, etc. Look at your local bookstore or library.
