I'm not sure what you mean when you ask where on earth did garnet birthstones come from - garnet is a gem stone that can be found just about anywhere on the globe. Its was first mined in Sri Lanka about 2500 years ago according to the site listed in source if that helps. Anyway:
The modern use of Garnet for January reflects its use by the Romans, the Hebrews and the Arabs. For all three cultures, the Garnet was used as the birthstone for January. As all three had a significant impact on the development of Western culture, this may be why it is used as the modern January birthstone.
Why it was selected, I have no idea...
