Is it possible to publish a journal article as an undergraduate university student? I had a person tell me I should publish a paper I originally did as a course research paper, for one of my course assignments. Personally I did not think it would be very likely for an undergraduate paper to be published. What do you think?

I would recommend asking a professor about it. Perhaps a professor could help you spruce it up to get it ready, and they may also be able to help you decide where to submit it. If they help you a lot, perhaps they would co-author it with you, which could increase your chances. You also need to be saying something that someone else hasn't said before-- at least by having some sort of unique perspective or analysis of what you've researched. It's worth a try!

There are journals that are run by undergraduates and that publish undergraduate research. You might want to check with a librarian at your college to see if such a journal can be found in the subject area of your article.

Sure you can. I did, and although I was only the second author, I had done all the research for it. Anyone can submit an article for publication - but talk to your advisor first for formatting advice, rewriting advice, which journal, and figuring out how to make your university pay the publishing costs. Good luck!

It is possible and as you suggest, it is also very rare.

I once had a professor that not only published as an undergraduate, by spoke at several symposia throughout the world.

Give it a shot.
