It depends on the situation and the school. My MS program will only allow 2 credits from another institution. You could transfer but you would almost have to start over.

Check to see what the school's requirements and transfer credit rules are.

I imagine that schools make exceptions in cases where a spouse had to move etc. But that is probably rare and different than transferring for a better school.

It really depends on the circumstances. If you attend one graduate school for a master's degree, you can transfer to another school for a doctorate. However, if you're going to transfer schools just to get a better name on your diploma, try to do it early or else you will have wasted a lot of time at school A. There's no garunte that your credits will transfer and if you were doing research, there's no garunte that you're research will transfer either. You'd be better off building your portfolio and then applying to the grad school you really want to go to.

It depends on 1) the program of study (e.g. an MSW vs. and MA in psychology would be different), The reason and where you are in your couse of study. I'm going to assume you are not referring to doctoral study which is an entirely different egg and much more dependent on faculty research interests.

In general if you are moving out of the area for legitimate reasons most programs will consider this, also if you are early on in your study (e.g. first semester) you will do better or at the end of your first year. But it is much more difficult to transfer courses because they may not be the same - there is more variablity in couses at the grad level in general. Education degrees may be some of the easier to transfer in as are many social work programs as the first year of most MSW programs are he same across the country.

What? You can't transfer from grad school to undergrad. You have to have your undergrad to get into grad school.

typically you would have to re-apply to a graduate school to transfer, although it is a very rare case that one will transfer graduate schools, especially since the application and selection process is a long and strenuous one.
