I got a new laptop and I wanted to upload videos from my JVC GR-D650U onto it. I connected it through USB cable and the Laptop didn't pick it up. I got a firewire for it and it still won't pick up. When I used to connect the DVcam to my old Windows XP PC through USB it would work fine. I know the USB port is fine because it picks up all my other appliances. As for my IEE 1394 port, I tried uninstalling the driver, restarting the computer and reinstalling the driver but no results. I tried plugging my camcorder in my roommate's laptop she has XP and it still didn't pick up the camcorder.

Any Suggestions?
Or should I go buy a new Firewire cord. (though I just bought this one)

Question- what is exactly the difference between digital MiniDV and analog Hi8 recording formats? I realize I may be rather ignorant of the technologies, yet my layman mind says “digital vs. analog”, and I don’t think of a “tape”, per se, when I think of a digital camcorder. (I know, e.g., the latest generation hard drive models don’t use tape) My question, then, is what’s the functional difference between MiniDV and Hi8 and how can a digital recording be captured on a tape medium? (like w/ my digital camera, I think of a card or a memory stick…)

the exposure setting, and from operating some other controls, such as super nightshot, program-auto-exposure, spot meter, and a few or several other things?

Please don't tell me something like, "Because that's the way Sony designed it," because, well DUH, I know that! I want to know WHY they designed it that way.

Will you come back every so often and read (and maybe even respond to, by editing your answers, if you want) my responses to your answers, please?

Thanks,
Mike Christensen

I do video editing as a hobby and it would be great if I could pull the tape from the camera and put it in a front-load deck right in my computer. They should be small enough to fit in a 5 1/4 bay judging from the size of the cameras nowadays, yet I've never seen one.

I'm looking for a digital camcorder that has the following features:

* mini-DV format
* microphone input jack
* video light
* image stabilization
* price in the $300-700 range

It seems really hard to find something current that has a microphone input. We are using this for interviews, so the sound quality is important and having a mic input seems to be the best way to cover this base.

Thanks for your thoughts and input.

My friend and I both have Mini DV Camcorders (Mine's a Panasonic, and his is a JVC). Around the same time we both seemed to come across the same problem with our cameras. At first it was just horizontal blue bars going across the screen, but eventually the picture and audio went out altogether. We bough a Dynex MiniDV Head Cleaner, which restored the picture on the Panasonic, but not the audio. But on the JVC the head cleaner won't even stay inside the cassette tray, it keeps ejecting. Is there something wrong with our cameras? Or are they just in need of a professional cleaning? Has anyone else experienced this problem, and know a way to fix it?

I have a MiniDv Camcorder and transfer Video trough IEEE 1394 (aka FireWire) and capture with Nero Vision Express. So my question is Does it loose quality after you export the video using Nero since it ReEncodes the Video? or does it not? I'm new to DV so thats why I ask.
