I do video editing as a hobby and it would be great if I could pull the tape from the camera and put it in a front-load deck right in my computer. They should be small enough to fit in a 5 1/4 bay judging from the size of the cameras nowadays, yet I've never seen one.

When DV first came out, there were such things as computer DV drives, that mounted like a hard drive. They were not popular. You can get pro DV decks from Panasonic and JVC that are desktop and have firewire computer connection. Priced about $1500.

At this moment, no such equipment is produced, except tape deck. The price is so as to say, quite expensive. It has a firewire port for easy connection to computer. Some friends use the cheap camera act as tape player/recorder. Permanently connected to computer
