Betsy,

There is not much practical difference between camcorders that are designed for the same purpose. So, just decide what you want to do with it (record birthday parties vs. make a feature film) and then seek the FEATURES that serve you the best. Skip all the technical BS and just think about the result you are actually trying to achieve (conveniently capturing family events vs. high-quality commercial production).

And if you can try out the camcorder hands-on before buying, or maybe get recommendations from friends that have similar camcorder needs, then by all means, do that first.

Remember: Any camcorder (to capture family events) is better than no camcorder at all, and you can always trade up later.

Good luck!

Do you want to just video stuff, then put the recordings on a shelf and watch them as-is? If so, a DVD camcorder would be your best choice.

Will you want to edit the video on your computer? If so, MiniDV is best format for that.

I use the Panasonic SDR-H18. Its not too expensive and it does the work. Also it depends what you are using it for. This should be good for everyday use.
Hope this helps
