I'm deciding whether to shoot my low budget independent film on a cheap Sony HC1 or a Panasonic Gs500.

Apparently the Sony DCR SR100 loses a lot of quality because it tapes in MPEG files which is highly compressed. When you edit you lose even more information. The JVC Everio line seems to be getting only luke warm reviews. The hard drive camcorders seem so appealing but I can let that go if there is a good camcorder in my budget with decent optical zoom, decent megapixels (2-3 would be great) and image stabilization. Am I asking for too much?

I have a JVC hdd digital camcorder and don't use it that often but when i do the battery has ran out everytime !!! I have two batteries and always charge them up after use !!! Is it right that the batteries should run out even when not in use because they have been left for a while ??? It's annoying when i want to just film something at the spur of the moment and there is no power in them !!! It seem strange to me because this doesn't happen with other stuff like digi camera and MP3 player !!! Should this happen or is my equipment faulty ?

I have a 1.6 GB movie file from a digital camcorder and I would like to put it on a DVD. I have software to do that, but can't find out if the process will reduce the size of the file so it will all fit on the DVD or not. I have never burned a DVD so I am not sure of how the process works.

I'd like to add other .MPG files (that is the format the 1.6 GB is in) to it as well (it was of my niece's wedding), but I don't know what I'm going to get on the DVD.

There are lots of digital cameras and other devices that will accept up to a 2 gb sd card. With the advent of 4 gb cards- will these devices also accept cards with higher amounts of storage capacity? Or will they reject a 4 gb card? If so, why?

I am thinking about buying a video cam corder that records directly to DVD before I leave the states for Europe, but I am wondering if it will be useless in Europe because it will be region 1? Or does it not matter to the cam corder what DVD you use with it?

The digital ones seem to be a bit cheaper, but is this for a certain reason? I want to buy one for a xmas gift - the person it's for is very technical minded, so I want to make sure I get the better of the two. Thanks for any help.

... and also are mini-dv tapes compatible with DV-cam cameras and dvcam tapes compatible with mini-dv cameras? I always thought that the terms mini-dv and dv-cam were interchangeble but now i hear they're not... if anyone could clarify, that'd be awesome!
