The digital ones seem to be a bit cheaper, but is this for a certain reason? I want to buy one for a xmas gift - the person it's for is very technical minded, so I want to make sure I get the better of the two. Thanks for any help.

Dont get a DVD one, although there is the ease and convinience of it being on DVD the picture will be compressed then when you put it on a pc to edit then make an edited dvd it will be compressed again. the more times its compressed the worse the picture is. Imagine looking at a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy each one is worse than the one before, thats what compression would do. get the one that isnt compressed, Tape may be older technology but is more suitable. oh and the other thing is most dvd cameras can only record up to hanf an hour per disk. Tapes run longer so less media changes or recording a longer event will be possible

No firewire won't work with analog or mini dvd. If you have an analog (VHS) camcorder… You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 70.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

Onto DVD is fine as long as its an RW you can't edit an R). If you intend to edit - it means you have to put it on the pc anyway so you might as well get a digital

DVD is bad, because the compressed MPEG format they record in can't be edited as accurately as DV. I like the idea of hard drive storage for DV, if you can easily swap in another drive once the first one is full. If not, MiniDV could still be the best choice.

There are so many digital camcorders...if you meant one that records to memory such as these:

I'd suggest you stay away from these...there is a reason why they are so much cheaper.

I'm sure you can figure out a way to ask your friend what he prefers without ruining the surprise.
