I'm deciding whether to shoot my low budget independent film on a cheap Sony HC1 or a Panasonic Gs500.

It's all about connectivity!
I use a Canon XL H1,which works beautifully, But you will get the same results with the SONY!
Using an Application like AVID and uploading to a Mac also makes Movie Making easier!
HD is set to reduce in Price-Just keep working with your current hardware!
