For editing video from the DVD camcorders, you options are much more limited than say for mini-DV.
Here are some editors that's will work with mpeg2 files:

They all offer free downloads of trial versions.

If you're talking about free video editing software, Windows Movie Maker is probably the best. For software that you have to pay for, Sony Vegas Pro is extremely good but also extremely pricey. I personally use Corel VideoStudio Pro X4. You do have to pay some money for it, but it is a lot better than Windows Movie Maker and is less expensive than Vegas Pro.

I started with Movie Maker that comes free with Windows XP, it is a good starting point with everything you need to edit a movie and burn it to CD
I moved on to Movie Plus which offers more features but the real good news is that you can use any films you made in Movie Maker, and burn them to DVD
Movie Plus 5 is the latest available fro Serif for about £70 I think.

Hope to see your results on Youtube soon.

If you are running Windows XP, I would recommend using the free editing software that comes with it called 'Movie Maker'. It is really good and the price is right.
You can download the latest version for free at www.microsoft.com
Hope that helps,
Pete
