The main difference is that DVD is the familiar laser-written disc, while MiniDV is a standard for camcorder video tape.

Whichever is best depends on how you plan to use your camcorder footage. If you plan to just view the raw footage directly on your TV or otherwise use it with a minimum of post-processing, the DVD would work well; you can just pop the DVD into your player and view it. If, however, you plan to do significant editing and burn your own DVD, you will probably want the MiniDV and connect it using a FireWire cable - you'll get a bit better quality at the cost of real-time playback. MiniDV works with most editing systems.

Plus, MiniDV is significantly cheaper.

Mini DV is video tape. DVD is a recordable disk.

dvd is for players to watch videos on disc much like vcds and laser disc etc,
mini dv i believe are tapes used for camera recording
