Software - February 2007

Hello- I have an old IBM Aptiva, which has many pictures and an address book from years back i wouldn't mind having a look at. However, when i start the recovery disk, i am greeted with ' The partition table is unrecognizable. Use FDISK to delete the partition' I believe it wont accept a floopy disk, as my sisters daughter fed the Pc some Lego. How could i once again access my computer :( Thanks.

My mother in law had someone from the geek squad come to her house for a computer clean up or something like that, and they told her that windows xp adds alot of junk to computers thats make the computers run slower than normal, (stuff noone will ever need ) just wondering if anyone knows what this is about and how to do it, Thanks And i will chose the best answer right away

It seems fairly random, i can be surfing the net for ages and it won't happen, then sometimes i open it up and it does it straight away?!?! I tried using Netscape and it does the same. My real concern came when my games did the same. I have been playing Dungeons and dragons online, Pro evo soccer 6, Battlefield 2142, ghost recon Futury thing and they all do it.
I use virus protection and Ad aware and Spybot but it keeps on happening and it's driving me nuts!!! I even bought a new hard drive and copied across all my stuff from the old one and the problem persists. Is it a virus, Registry problem, Goblins?!?!

When it happens in games sometimes i get a blue text screen that says a device driver caused a problem but i have updated the NVidia driver so got no clue, also i get error reports from all.
Please help me. I've got a 3.2GHZ Pentium 4, Nvidia 6800 128k graphics card with latest driver, 2GB of RAM, 320 Gig of memory so i can't see what is going wrong.

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ive made a lot of topics so if you need more information, cause I have to leave, thats where it is. OK, I have had problems for 3 weeks. About 10 or so days ago, ive lost count, I recieved Stop errors. It never happened until I redid windows. It was frequent, about 3-5 times a day. People said it was the ram, I took one out at a time, still did it, ran them in different orders, still did it. So, I switched out my harddrives, well, switched them around making the secondary primary. Loaded windows on it, with literally nothing on any partition or anything, and the other one wasn't hooked up yet. Loaded minimal programs, Firewall, Microsoft Updates, Mozilla, a couple video programs, a couple picture programs, Messenger, and a burner program. This is minimal considering I usually have a list of like...60 programs. So, everything was working fine, I hooked up my other drive, moved things around basically formatting everything. I wake up this morning, and I have the errors again..

In previous versions of Excel I was able to copy a worksheet that contained a chart and have the links for the chart update to the new worksheet name. In Office 2007 I am not able to do this - my guess is there is a security setting that is not allowing the update to happen. Any ideas on how to change this??

Honestly (in my own opinion, of course), i think it truly sucks a$$, and is just a waste of space on any hard drive. The damn thing can't run Doom 3, might as well forget about it running any current Grand Theft Auto game (don't tell me about the compatibility mode - i already TRIED that). Overall, it seems to use up a load of RAM.
One more thing - is it me, or does Vista seem to have some VERY annoying security?

Your thoughts, please, and make them meaningful.

I think I accidentally deleted Winnt system 32 SFC.Dll. I have tried typing in an expand command but it says cannot find file. Any suggestions as to what else I can type in at the command line?

I'm really concerned here! i mean my dad just picked up a new copy of Windows Vista, but i don't know if I shold install it. I love my Media Center edition computer way too much, but it's okay I don't need it. Will I lose all my softwares and data though? does that mean I will have to reinstall everything?

And if I do, how can I back up what I've got now so I can chuck it back into my new OSed computer? Any (inexpensive or hopefully free) recommendations?

And also, are my softwares(/software... how do you say software in plural?) compatible in Vista?
