I'm really concerned here! i mean my dad just picked up a new copy of Windows Vista, but i don't know if I shold install it. I love my Media Center edition computer way too much, but it's okay I don't need it. Will I lose all my softwares and data though? does that mean I will have to reinstall everything?

And if I do, how can I back up what I've got now so I can chuck it back into my new OSed computer? Any (inexpensive or hopefully free) recommendations?

And also, are my softwares(/software... how do you say software in plural?) compatible in Vista?

Sorry this is so long :( thanks

If it's a clean (new) install, you'll lose everything, but if it's an upgrade, you won't.

Back up all of your existing files. I would not install Vista for a few months so you can see what problems develop. It is my understanding it will require a lot more memory and you may need to upgrade your computer. I guess my biggest question is why do you think you need Vista? Having the latest and greatest may turn out to be the latest but not necessarily the greatest.

i recomend you to use the VISTA UPGRADE ADVISOR, you can get that from microsoft.com. it will tell you everything from hardware to software if it is compatible to windows vista it will also tell you what you need to do about the incompatible software to vista that you have. but as always when upgarding any OS it is wise to back-up all your files incase of failure that might occur on installation to any removable disc such cd or dvd, or to your another hard disk,

do no longer hear to them! lol, in case you do a improve from Xp to vista (especially an improve) all your records like photographs, docs, spreadsheets, movies, music will all be saved and saved below your C:domicile windows.previous folder. As on your antivirus i'm not sure, i think of it is going to delete it. yet thats ok in case you have the set up disk, in simple terms re-set up it! alongside with your telephone dialer. in case you desire any help PM me.
