I want to burn .avi files on to a dvd, and I know I have to convert them, but don't know which program to use?
Any suggestions??

Preferably, looking for a freeware, if at all possible!

I like Pinnacle Studio.

http://www.pinnaclesys.com

It isn't freeware, but they do have a trial version available for download. The full product costs around $70, so it's not priced like a commercial product either, which can run $300 and up. I have used several free packages like the Nero stuff, but the Pinnacle Studio stuff is far better. Another proof of the old "you get what you pay for"

If you can get your hands on it, Nero Vision seems to do a very good job of working with just about any video files. It even does a good job of converting frame rates so it can be written to DVD and played on your TV. Windows Movie Maker might work for writing files to a Video CD but I haven't really played around with it.

defintely get DivX, its a free bundle that contains the divx player, divx converter (what you need for burning avi movies to a dvd), and the divx codec for media player (you need the codec in order to play avi movies with divx encoding in media player). the basic version is free, you can find it from divx.com. they have a free version and a pro version. the free version has the divx codec, the divx player, and something like a free trial of the divx convertor. if you're gonna be burning avi movies all the time, you might as well pay for the pro version, but if your only gonna do a limited number of avi movies, just get the free version, i think it has a 15 day free trial of the convertor.
