Software - January 2007

I wanna get all these for my laptop: avg free edition, lavasoft ad-aware, spybot search n destroy, ccleaner and zone alarm...
i'm just scared if it'll clashes wit one another n end up doin worse for my com.

if not which will be better alternatives?

Long story short - the kids have downloaded or deleted something in my computer and I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. I used to be able to view movies at IVillage and have tried to take a couple of online courses but receive error messages that I am missing plugins. I have upgraded and then deleted and re-downloaded Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Realplayer and Adobe but that doesn't seem to fix the problem. I also upgraded from the Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta version to the full version. Can someone give me some direction?

My daughter tried to use her Barbie of Swan lake software but it no longer works. I was going to uninstall it and then reinstall it but on the remove software list the icon for it has a red x through it. I think it might has something to do with having to upgrade quick time? If anyone knows why this red x, please enlighten me.

What are the pros/cons of Linux?

And if I do install it, can I go back and forth between Linux and Windows until I decide whether or not I like Linux?

What is the best place to get Linux, and is there a specific version I should get?

Also will my Linksys wireless router work with Linux?

I learned of LimeWire a few days ago. Downloading music and stuff. Even the fact that you can get it for FREE. I mean, come on, this is different form iTunes, MusicMatch. Isn't this wrong?? I'm on nobody's side here, but don't you think this is a little TOO good to be true???

programs running:
zonealarm, avg antivirus free, miutorrent, msn messenger, maplestory, 1-2 webbrowsers, windows explorer

comp specs:
p4, 3.0ghz, 512ram, raedon X300/X550 series 128ram, adsl broadband, 80gb HDD which currently is abt 50% used

i am getting strange CPU usage spikes ~100% from windows task manager (performances); graphics laggy and sound stuttery. however usually i am in the game maplestory when it happens; im unable to see wat caused the spike, only that there was a spike in the history..

processes dont go above 20k Mem usage (viewed during non spike period) and all processes seem normal (not suspicious)

have run anti virus scan, and ad-aware, in fact just format my pc 2wks ago, and never had this problem until today; ie i was able to run all these applications previously, and even more on occasion without any problem at all

how can i stop this from happening or find out whats causing it???

I need to know, is it okay to run Windows Vista Home Basic on my laptop even though it says on Microsoft.com that its not the best for it? Because, it's cheap, it doesnt require much and it doesnt do much either, so my memory will be safe. Also, is it okay to run Home Premium with 512MB even though it needs 1GB? Help please!? I don't wanna get left behind in the past!
