You are correct.
Limewire is full of a wonderful selection of:
Viruses
Key Loggers to monitor what your type (even passwords)
Spy ware
My adivse is that they are all the same and all breach or are close to breching copyright laws and becoming illegal. You can never truly prove that what you are download is safe.
I use:

It is 100% safe to use but has a vert limited selection of songs to download, (MP3 format)
My advise, you may download a P2P system at your own risk.. I would therefore recommend:
Ares as suggested
Bearshare
As the two most realiable and safest..
