I need to know, is it okay to run Windows Vista Home Basic on my laptop even though it says on Microsoft.com that its not the best for it? Because, it's cheap, it doesnt require much and it doesnt do much either, so my memory will be safe. Also, is it okay to run Home Premium with 512MB even though it needs 1GB? Help please!? I don't wanna get left behind in the past!

Vista is made for laptops and computers with a very high end hardwares. So, my suggestion is don not install Vista on your laptop.

Additional info:
In case you upgraded your laptop/pc to a vista compatible hardware, still do not install Vista immediately. Wait for the first service pack to come out. Usually the first users of an opertating system are test dummys for some bugs.

People will still be using Windows XP for another 2-3 years. The computer will run slow with anything less than 1GB of RAM. The processor and speed is iportant also. You'll want to have at least a 2GHz processor and a 32MB Video Adapter.

Vista is a huge memory hog. Your laptop will run - but not very well. If Microsoft is saying that the MINIMUM specs to run are 1 gig of RAM and 15 gig of hard drive space - you better believe it will take even more RAM to run this operating system decently!!

As yyou can see, the minimum RAM required is 512Mb, so yes - you can run Windows Vista. You just have to turn all the nice features off.

Bit like having a convertible that you can't take the roof down on.

First of all, many, many of us will still being using XP, so you will not be left behind in the past. Second, I have to agree with Linux OS; best not to try to run Vista unless you upgrade your RAM.

Vista is a memory hog.
Try Kubuntu Linux, free, easy to use, and looks as good as Vista
