Hi there. Hal.dll means Hardware Abstraction Layer. Basically you can go to this site and it'll explain how to fix it.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_haldll_missing.htm

The download for it is here:

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?hal

Hope this helps

P.S. Also for the person who suggested System Restore, it's not a bad option, but the problem is, if hal.dll file is missing, WinXP won't even let u login in the first place. Windows just won't load at all with that file missing, as it's a system file and is required at bootup. Also, I think that hal.dll file has different file versions, depends on what version of XP you're running, Home or Pro.

I can suggest doing a System Restore. Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and you will see System Restore. System Restore if enabled has taken snapshots of your computer configuration. When you run the wizard it will show you a calendar page of the dates it took the snapshots. Back track to a date or month you weren't having troubles with that missing file. Best of luck.

You're pretty much outta luck. You can't just download winxp for free (legally). If you want to go the pirate (illegal) route you could try thepiratebay.org. You'll need torrent software to download the torrent, you could try http://www.utorrent.com/ Or try this http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?hal it covers errors relating to hal.dll. Good luck.
