It is very easy to count words in a MS Word file but there appears to be no such function in MS Excel. I have to copy the text from Excel and then paste it in Word to count words but it consumes a great deal of time.

Is there any simpler method to count words in Excel?

I'm just finishing up my resume, and I fixed it so it all fits on one page instead of two. However, now I don't know how to get rid of the blank second page. How do I do that?

My husband and I are buying a laptop (a Dell) for his nephew in Brazil. I can get a refurbished one for pretty cheap but it doesn't come with anything except the Microsoft XP Pro OS. Brazil is an open-source country so do I need to put Freeware or OpenOffice.org on it? Also, if we do get the open source software, how compatible will it be with programs like MSN Messenger and such? The less money we have to spend, the better, but we want to make sure we get the right software for him (and us so we can talk to him). Would it be better to get one without an OS as well, and get something else instead? I would be setting it all up for him here as I don't really know how tech-savvy he is. If you have any other ideas, please feel free to share. Thanks!!

Say I past the following line into Excel:

2/1 connected 300 normal

Then I click on Data, Text to Columns, Finished

Everything gets put into a column just as I want. But 2/1 gets converted to a date "1-Fed". If I then try to reformat that column to general - that turns it into "39114". Not at all what I want. How do I get that text to remain literally 2/1 and not get converted to a date along the way?

Can data files on DVD+RWs be overwritten but also free the space on the DVD+RW of the deleted files without having to completely erase the DVD+RW to free the space? Is there any free software that can do this? I have tried RecordNow but it doesn't seem to free the space when I delete files. I know it can be done with videos but am not sure if it can be done with data files.

My PC is a brand-new Windows XP Home Edition, and it frequently crashes, freezes-up, or slows down to a snail's pace, very much like I had a Dial-up instead of DSL Broadband. These things occur not just Online, but Offline, as well. My PC needs help desperately, and so do I, before I junk it or smash it. I'm at my wits end as to what to do since I'm new to computing. Thank You.

Over the last few month I have started to get very frustrated with ms office and the direction of the new version.

I need a great contact management program/ email with a wordprocessor, a presentation package, a desktop publisher, and spreadsheets.

I checked out word perfect but the contact managment (mail) seems a little goofy.

any suggestions are appresiated, I am a realtor but do not want to work with the specific realtor packages, they are way to limited in ability.

After using office 2003 for years, I find out that my version of it may have been an early hacked version, it was on the machine when I bought it.

I have tried both the beta version of office 2007 as well as the trial version, but I can't open any of my older word, exell or powerpoint files.

Does anyone know if there is a work around, or a method that is going to be able to open my existing files when I do upgrade.
