upgrade to a windows media player 10 by going to the microsoft website.

You need the proper codec to play the video. The most common is DivX. If you still are unable to play it, try searching for and downloading 'Media Player Classic' or 'VLC Player', which should both play any file.
You can also search for and download a program called 'GSpot', which will tell you what codec is needed to play the video.
Finally, you can find and download the 'KLite Codec Pack', which includes basically any and all codecs you would ever need. Though, be careful which ones you install and how. Depending on your setup, some of them can mess up your audio configuration.

you may not have the codec. the best media player that has most of the codecs in itself is vlc media player and you can download it from the Internet for free.

Maybe it's DiVX format so you need to download the codec. I recommend you to download KMPlayer It's an excellent program. It plays almost all media formats (included DiVX). It works on windows 98, XP, etc.
