Software - November 2006

Yesterday, I turned on my computer after almost two of weeks of not using it and I got two errors on my "black welcome screen" that read " Secondary disk at drive 0 not found" and "Secondary disk at drive 1 not found". When I pressed the key to proceed it took too long to start up windows - the purple progress bar kept freezing - so I rebooted manually then it displayed the same errors. Today, it displayed only the " Secondary disk at drive 0 not found" and started up okay. I still wonder what could be wrong, if this is a symptom of a bigger problem.

I have gotten into Recovery console, but dont find a command to check to see which windows files are missing or corrupted. Surely there is a program to do this? I am very familiar with DOS. Chkdsk only checks the intergrity of the disk, not of the files that might be missing and neccesary for windows. Any help?

Is Win98SE available anywhere for free or cheap, via download or otherwise?

I have an old computer that originally came with Win 98. (It only has 192K of memory) I later upgraded it via download to Win98 SE. Then, I had some software problems and MS phone help told me I needed to wipe out most of my apps and the operating system and reinstall the opearating system from the my hard disk. This apparently installed Win98, but not SE. Now there are applications and devices I can't use. Any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to repair an XP installation. I get as far as asking for the administrator password. When I type the right one it, it accepts it but then merely dumps to a DOS looking c:\windows
and does nothing else. Whats wrong?

I am downloading a file from the internet cafe that I go every day, but the problem is the internet cafe guy is concerned about letting users download there, so I need to hide the program from tray so he cant stop it. btw I'm just downloading stuff for school projects and its normal http download via download manager.
