I am trying to repair an XP installation. I get as far as asking for the administrator password. When I type the right one it, it accepts it but then merely dumps to a DOS looking c:\windows
and does nothing else. Whats wrong?

You are at the command line prompt which allows you to enter DOS like commands to fix your system. I suggest you read up on the available commands (such as fixboot and chkdsk) before you do anything as there are a number of options but you really should understand what needs to be done before you use the command line to repair your system.

Hmmmm. From my past experience having had to do the same thing, the administrator password actually isn't.

I don't know but seems as if this can't hurt, but next time it asks for administrator password, don't enter anything just press the enter key. Then press it again. From what I had read prior to my experience there actually is NOT an admin. password.

So try leaving blank and pressing enter, then press enter again.

I hope it works. It did for me.

Good luck

I had the comparable issue with my homestead windows XP and that i purely ended up putting in my disc and repairing this technique and whilst it askes for a password throughout the time of setup you could the two positioned one in or no longer.
