Security - December 2007

My current subscription with Norton Anti Virus is experied and I need to renew it for $50 for another year (basic protection). I am wondering: should I renew it or look for a different software. Does anyone have a good anti-virus and a bit cheaper with good protection?
Any advise and recommendation will be much appreciated it.

In middle of an arguement with a friend of mine about Encryption law. I'd heard that it was illegal to encrypt an email over 128. OVER 128, not 128.

So I'd like to know if there are laws regarding personal email encryption.

My computer was infected a while back, and my mouse would stop working at random times and the laptop would make a loud "ding."

Could it have been the 'virus / ad-ware / spyware' problem or is it a problem with the mouse cord?

Sometimes there's a message like this embedded in the trace: "report abuse to internet.abuse@sjlb.ca." Should I write there, or could that be fake?

Other times there are a lot of e-mail addresses listed with "change ..." in front of each one; hard to find which one to write to, but there's often one or more with "abuse" in the address.

If I try to e-mail the individual or company computer being hijacked, what should I be careful of to keep my own computer safe?

Sometimes during a phone call (and my DSL desktop computer is on), I hear a short burst of touch tone numbers being dialed. Having occurred during two different phone calls, I'm pretty sure its a dialer virus.

However, there is no detection of such from my AVG Free edition virus scanner, Spybot Search N' Destroy or Crap Cleaner.

Is there any other way I can manually seek out and find a dialer virus? What file names and extensions should I look for?

I recently installed Windows XP on my computer, and I want to find a good firewall. But before I go and find a good free one, I want to know if Windows XP's firewall will protect me. I'm not concerned about outbound stuff because I don't use a credit card or anything, and if anyone found out my password for a site it wouldn't matter because I don't put personal info on them, and if I do, its normally not real. If you have any suggestions on a good free firewall, then let me know too.

Foldrs are not opening up. On clicking a folder it displays the list of pograms for opening it,

I tried avg anti virus but it was not effective against these . How to face these virus attacks without a vaccine?Is there any freeware effective against these viruses and not slowing down the computer?

I did a deep search on pipl and zabasearch, and scary times ensued. It revealed my birthdate, email address, physical address, the full names of my family members, etc... Basic internet searches (e.g. Google) don't turn this stuff up. What can I do to scrub it out? Is it hopeless?
