My computer was infected a while back, and my mouse would stop working at random times and the laptop would make a loud "ding."

Could it have been the 'virus / ad-ware / spyware' problem or is it a problem with the mouse cord?

Thank You.

Thank you. I already got rid of the virus and the mouse seems to work fine now, I was just curious.

Now the mouse broke again.
I think it's a bad wire.

Peripherals (mice, keyboards, monitors and such) cannot be "infected" with a virus. They have no memory, no way to store the virus's code. If it's not working, it is probably a faulty mouse, or it could be another type of hardware conflict (or even a mouse driver issue). Try using a USB to P/S 2 adapter if your mouse came with one. It would be a little green thing that your mouse plugs into on one end and it plugs into a round connector with pins on the back of your computer case. If that fixes it, you probably have a hardware (IRQ) conflict. I'd ask a computer-savvy person to take a look at your BIOS settings but be sure they know what they're doing.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I didn't notice you said it was a laptop. Forget what I said about the P/S 2 adapter.

The mouse can't get infected, but if your OS got infected then it may prevent the mouse from working properly. Try reinstalling the system of get a good anti-virus program.

i do no longer think of you have a scourge! do no longer challenge! this would not sound like virus behaviour, maximum folk of modern-day viruses opt to act quietly and undetected to thieve information and open backdoors. A bluescreened laptop is of little need to a scourge or virusmaker. It sounds like your working gadget has have been given to the factor the place there are a lot of errors that this is no longer worth fixing. If I have been you i might reproduction my information/%. .and so on onto an exterior medium, wipe the laptop and do an entire re-deploy. as quickly as a working laptop or laptop's at that degree you haven't any longer have been given a wish in hell of having it back to new without reformat. no longer likely the respond you opt for yet i think of this is the main suitable advice you're gonna get!
