Other - Computers - November 2007

Do I need to 'cut them up' if they contain sensitive data?
I suppose my old programs can go to a thrift store, or 'Freecycle', but I'm more concerned about disposing of my old (late '80's and 90's) floppy data disks. The computer that ran them is LONG GONE, so there is no way I can erase them.
All suggestions and advice greatly appreciated!

Hi, i have a problem. Today i started up my computer and the color is wrong, I opened display properties and under setting/color quality, the color gradient is missing red (only blue and yellow), i tried everything but still doesn't work. can anyone help?

Ok, so a couple days ago I went to to turn on my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 1505 I think. I got a blue screen after the Windows logo, saying something like "unmountable boot volume." I googled it so I could try fixing. I ended up making it worse and then mycomputer started saying the hal.dll file wasmissing or corrupt. So I googled again and I couldn't fix it. So I figured if I just reinstall XP with a clean slate everything would be fine. However, once I deletd the partitions and Windows had to format it, it would not go beyond 0%. So I tried a quick format to see if that would work and it went through 100% but it said that something was corrupt. Now, my computer wont go beyond the splash screen and I can't install Windows XP or Vista because it won'tformat. I tried using the XP recovery console to format and it still won't. When I turn on my computer it says something with "BOOTMGR" or "BOOTMSG" I can't remember exactly.

Is it fixable? I am still under warranty which is good.

Well i have a compaq computer i want to whip clean and reinstall xp on and so i have a copy of windows xp i have had for a long time and i was wondering could i just use that copy to reinstall windows and get the drivers for the computer off compaq's site and be ok? Because i really dont feel like bothering with ordering the restore and etc disc's. So i was just wondering if it would be ok to do what i plan on doing and the computer still be fine? I mean im no idiot on a computer but im just more cautions when messing with a computer i havent dealt with much and just want to make sure its ok with what im doing.

My computer keeps telling me that I'm running low on virtual memory - I think that running lots of programs at the same time reduces it and so I'm trying not to use too much at once but is there anything else I can do to help my computer?

I've got a Nintendo gamecube and a big screen laptop computer. Is there any way to hook up the gamecube to the laptop so I can use the laptops screen to play?

If so, could you detail which connector pieces I need and how/where to plug them in? Someone told me to get a cinch connector, which I did, but I have no idea how to set it up!

I have a Compaq ( mainly HP) Presario F500 laptop Bought june 2007 With Vista Home edition With AMD 64 AthlonX2 NVDIA graphics. Great computer! Slow as hell after the third month i had it. I am a computer external computer genuis. (which means i know how to chang any setting or fix anything without taking it apart. I have one of the best anti virus software 4 firewalls and alot of disk space. I do disk cleanup weekly. Need solutions to problem or i will run recovery.

Ive downloaded a movie and i tried to burn it with windows media player but all it had was the audio. What do I need to do to get the picture and audio, and is there a specific disk that i need? When you upload a video and it is supposed to be shown vertically because that's how it was taped, it comes out horizontal, and you have to like turn your head sideways to watch it. Is there a way you can rotate the video?!

My computer shuts off randomly.
The monitor goes off and i can hear the fan stop and stuff, but the green light is still on.
When this happens, i usually shut off the powersupply to the entire computer for 1-5 mins and start it up again. (it happens 30 mins-90 mins later)

Ok. I have a E machines PC. 60 gig hardrive. I have fragmented and ran disc clean up. Ive uninstalled a ton of programs that I dont use. I have about 6 gigs of music and 2 gigs of games. I cant figure out what is taking up so much room! I have only 3% space avaiable! Please help!
