how much ram do you have? if its any less then 512mb then that willl probly be why its running slowly. Have you done a virus and spyware scan? could be that.

4 firewalls sounds excessive, those sorts of programs slow down your computer because they are always running. If you know so much, I'm sure you are smart enough that your computer won't become an easy target for phishing and hacking anyway. Anti virus is good too! but the best in detection isn't always the best. I use AVG free. mostly cause it's free, but also because it's light, it doesn't slow down a computer nearly as much as norton does. if you have a norton suite, i recommend changing to something more speedy. Also worth upgrading is ram, if you only have 1 GB and vista, i'm sure that additional ram would help out the sluggishness.

If it is slower now than when you bought it, than you are running too much stuff. I will accept your claim that you have the "best" antivirus software. How about anti-spyware? 4 firewalls seems extreme. Use as many hardware firewalls as you want, but limit yourself to 1 software firewall.
Do your weekly antivirus scans turn up anything?

Well first of all, FOUR FIREWALLS?
That is extreme overkill. And is probably slowing down your computer.
Only run essential programs.
Like, one antivirus, one firewall.
And nothing else.
Also, use a program like Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware, or both, to make sure all spyware is removed from your computer.
Check your processes and if you have more that 55-60 processes running. Then you need to shut down everything that you don't need.

I agree with Jonathan, too many softwares force a PC to go slower, if a lot of them is running in background. Also, Norton suite is a sure slower. get rid of 3 of those 4 firewalls.

you might have installed a lot of applications and programs to your PC, although you have a lot of free space on your hardrive a lot of programs are running in the bakcground these are programs that are running behind your back...
click start > run
on the run dialogbox type msconfig then click ok
a tabbed dialog box will appear
choose Startup
in there you will see a list of programs that runs whenever u start your pc, uncheck some programs that you think is not needed then restart your machine your PC will boot faster and a lot of memory used by those applications are freed.
