Do I need to 'cut them up' if they contain sensitive data?
I suppose my old programs can go to a thrift store, or 'Freecycle', but I'm more concerned about disposing of my old (late '80's and 90's) floppy data disks. The computer that ran them is LONG GONE, so there is no way I can erase them.
All suggestions and advice greatly appreciated!

Do you have a fire place or a chiminea? What about a LARGE ashtray? You could even put them on a disposable baking dish (made of tin foil -can be found on the baking aisle) and put them in your grill! (I personally would not burn them inside of the oven in the house because of the smell and fumes from burning plastic)...

It use to be as simple as running a magnet across them, but that no longer works. The easiest way is to just expose the data platter (magnetic disk) and the run somthing metal across a large portion of the exposed area, this should make the disk unreadable and unuable, if you don't feel like this is enough, just remove any metal bits from the disk and shred it like it was sugested above.

If you are seriously concerned about sensitive date I would find me, or if you have one, a decent shredder and run them through it. Of course pull out the metal parts. Cutting them up will work but if someone was to find them they can just tape them back together and pull off your data. Floppy disks are pretty impervious to physical destruction.
