Laptops & Notebooks - August 2007

My 9-year old child asked if he could have a laptop this morning. I don't know what to say. I've seen 9 year olds with laptops, but I think that's a little too old.
Should I give my child a laptop, or not? If not, at what age?

My laptop running on Windows Vista was working normally until today. When I start the machine, just a blank screen is displayed.
The machine doesn't even ask for the boot password which I've set on the machine, and remains blank all the time (the screen is not activated).
What can be the problem? What should I do?
Help!!!

I'm a student and Gamer,[Residing in Canada], I need the works.
Memory- 2GB ram, preferrably 120 GB hardrive.DVD reader/writer.GREAT graphics, not sure, there are tonnes of different types- NVIDIA is expensive.Good battery life -more then 3 hours atleast.Not tooo heavy, sturdy, I'll be carrying it around with me to University.Ermm..Card Readers,Webcam, wireless, bluetooth and the whole shebang of course...Can anyone recommend a good laptop, not super expensive- somewhere in the range of 799- 1000 canadian dollars preferrably.
Very confused in the processor section.It needs to be fast.
Whats the difference between-
Intel pentium Dual Core processor T2080
Intel Centrino Duo Processor tech with Intel Core Duo processor T2450
Intel centrino Duo processor tech with intel core 2 duo processor T5450...
and intel Celeron Processor 520...
I would find out myself, but if you guys know..well im lazy :).
Nvidia would be great too..but if theres a less costly substitute...

I built my dell online about a month ago..Yesterday it was suppose to ship out so I was so excited! I get home yesterday and I have a message from dell that there was a back up and I won't get my lap top until the 30th....They waited until the day it was suppose to be shipped to tell me this?

My dad recently bought logitech's vx revolution. the mouse is almost perfect, so I was looking logitech's mouses and I saw the similar one - the mx revolution (the note on it's box sayed it's the worlds advanced mouse). so what do people in the world think about mx revolution, or does anybody have an idea what are the good, I mean, a REALLY good mouse. any ideas... I have a notebook, so I don't want too many wires (cuz I already have too much wires) so I wanna wireless?

Newest Dell D620 Laptops and other Dell laptops display on DLP, LCD projectors in a squared form, not filling the screen. With resolution changes and refresh rate changes, I can only get the entire desktop to display on settings that end up making the image tiny, also not filling the screen. The old Dell Laptops required only a function-F8 to get the image up on the screen, and if that didn't work, you just dropped the resolution to 1024x768 and that fixed it. We run our projectors in integrated office settings with extron switching and AMX control systems. There is something different with these newer models. Dell support was a joke and no help whatsoever. If your issue doesn't fit in their "help manual" in Mumbai, you get no support. ZERO thinking out of the box with them. Any help is appreciated if you have had this issue and have the solution.

I have a Mac G3 powerbook OSX
With a Freecom Classic CD Ext Recorder/player
Using TOAST 6 Titanum..... it worked fine, always coming up on the Toast window UNTILL 5 minutes ago..... suddenly it cant find the recorder..... I've tried rebooting the mac, disconecting/reconecting the power from the freecom/ disconecting the firewire conections........ Still wont find the recorder.
Ps I dont have the driver- disc from the Freecom as somebody gave it to me a year ago
Any bright Ideas ?

Hi all

I bought a new PC dual core and all the rest of it - I have 2 gigs RAM I can upgrade to 4 but I am wondering will it actually be utilised as I read somewhere that most games and such dont require 4 gigs yet so you could have 2 gigs sitting doing nothing!

any thoughts???

is there any major difference between these 2 processors?
1.66 seems a fair bit smaller than 1.83 for some reason but was wondering performace diff.

its an extra 110 bucks australian to upgrade via dell.

i have fair decent specs everywhere else but; i.e 256mb video card, 2gb ram etc.

ive heard that it's bad for your laptop to let it sit on your bed or soft surfaces while its on? people have told me it over heats and may cause problems.

my wife's laptop crashed with what i believe is a serious virus but she has pictures of her grandmother on there that are no where else, hence she wants to save them via data recovery.

I haven't taken it apart, but I doubt there's a stick of 128 in the computer because that would mean there's a 512, a 256, & only 1 of 2 128's inside. Doesn't make sense does it?

Surely there's 2 sticks of 512 inside. It's the Dell Inspiron 1501 from only a month ago, but I couldn't find any detailed info about how many slots are inside.

I installed Vista a week ago on my Toshiba p25-s507 and it says there's a Gig installed, so I know something isn't right with hers.

Right now I have an Compaq Presario notebook computer, and it's a bit...rickety.

I want to save up and splurge for a really nice computer-- Probably at the beginning of next year when all the stuff goes on sale, (and i get my pay raise!)

What should I look for?
I really don't know much about computers.

My boyfriend keeps telling me I should get a Mac.

I don't want to skimp out, and I'm willing to spend.

I need it for school, and a lot of photo, graphics and art programs i use.

Also, I know that there is new technology developing every day, and there will be many new computers out in the next few months, I'm just looking for a general idea.

If I hold down a arrow key for a few seconds, it beeps very loud.
There aren't any options to change for the speakers (volume, etc) and it can't play music.
How do I stop this?
Its a Dell Latitude running on W2000.

I want to buy one, under $300 if possible, but would I get it cheaper if I only got it to use for taking notes at school, no internet or anything? I don't even need MS Word, just notepad like on a regular computer. Where can I find a cheap one - not ebay because I don't have a CC or PayPal.
