everytime i try to play a dvd on my laptop it tells me that its missing the mpeg-2 codec thingy

this is the message that im getting "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

Because you need get the program call mpeg-2 codec. Download a video and audio codec program off http://www.download.com. Do people ever think before posting an easy question like this on the net.

Grab yourself a codec pack, like K-lite

fixes most codec issues.

download this free program and install, insert dvd start the program and it will tell you which codecs are missing, or just go to the Divx site and install that entire download.....

Upgrade your version of Windows Media Player. Go to http://microsoft.com and get the lastest version.

try to set the computer in the programming section to allow yout to play movies. i have the same problem. or, you might just have to download something
